De novo genes represent a major source of genetic variation with a profound impact on adaptation, phenotypic variation, and evolutionary innovation.
This meeting will fulfill the need to:
Provide a synthesis of the current knowledge of de novo gene evolution and function
Develop shared guidelines concerning the annotation of de novo genes, particularly those encoding small proteins
Identify critical areas and compelling questions at the intersection of evolutionary biology, functional genomics, and other disciplines where future interdisciplinary research efforts should concentrate
Promote novel opportunities for collaboration among investigators from different fields
Provide recommendations for improved annotation tools to identify functional de novo genes
Travel grants of $500 or more for trainees are available!
