Beekeeping Basics

  3/13 - 5/16
Classroom & Field Day $65.00

Have you ever thought about keeping bees?  For ag exemption purposes, to pollinate your garden, make your own honey, or just as a hobby?

This program is for anyone interested in beekeeping and/or learning how to start beekeeping, but need to know where to start. This class is geared for first time beekeepers and presented by experienced beekeepers, entomologists and horticulturists.

Anyone can be a beekeeper—young or old, city or country dweller!

During this course, we will cover the basics of bees and beekeeping, including: bee biology, beekeeping equipment and clothing, what to expect with your bees, and plants to provide your bees.

A handsā€on field day to a beekeeper’s yard will be where you will learn the most about beekeeping! Must sign a medical release waiver to participate. Bee suit provided.  Directions to apiary given on Friday.

Lunch is provided on Friday!  Lunch will be chicken, pasta, salad and bread sticks.

Classroom:  Fri., May 17, 9 am-4 pm
Field Day Options:

  • Sun., May 19, 8:30 am-10 am (weather dependent)**
  • Sun, May 19, 10:30 am-12 pm
  • Mon., May 20, 3 pm-5 pm

*there may be the opportunity to have the field day on Friday after our class, more details to come.

** Field day time may vary depending on weather - if weather is very warm, we may start earlier in the morning to get you out of the heat.

We are limited on bee suits, so field day sessions need to be small (12 max).  In addition, we can only open the hives twice in one day, so we will need a third field day on Monday afternoon - if you can make that date, please sign up for it!
