Welcome

The meeting will start at 9:00 AM CDT on November 6 and end around 12:00 PM CDT on November 9.

De Novo Gene Birth

De novo genes represent a major source of genetic variation with a profound impact on adaptation, phenotypic variation, and evolutionary innovation.

This meeting will fulfill the need to:

  • Provide a synthesis of the current knowledge of de novo gene evolution and function
  • Develop shared guidelines concerning the annotation of de novo genes, particularly those encoding small proteins
  • Identify critical areas and compelling questions at the intersection of evolutionary biology, functional genomics, and other disciplines where future interdisciplinary research efforts should concentrate
  • Promote novel opportunities for collaboration among investigators from different fields
  • Provide recommendations for improved annotation tools to identify functional de novo genes
